ABORTION & SEX ADVICE The Juneau campus strongly supports abortion services for all students. Two young men, who identify as transgender, dressed as women and spoke at the Nov. 19 Anchorage Assembly meeting in support of a resolution to designate Nov. 20 as a “Transgender Day of Remembrance.” They were the only people to speak on the resolution which was unanimously approved by Assembly members to “honor transgender people around the world whose lives have been lost to anti-transgender violence.” The resolution states that “transgender people are disproportionately affected...

While hate crimes in Alaska are extremely rare, the number increased slightly from 2017 to 2018 according to the FBI’s latest Hate Crimes Statistics released this month. Nationally, however, the number of hate crimes decreased – from 7,175 in 2017 to 7,120 in 2018. More than 16,000 law enforcement agencies provided data for the study. In 2018 Alaska reported no hate crimes that were motivated by bias against a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity or...

Last month U.S. Attorney General William Barr spoke at the University of Notre Dame Law School, sharing his thoughts about religious liberty in present-day America. Among the many striking statements in Barr’s speech were the following: religious liberty is “a right towards men,” but “a duty towards the Creator,” and a “duty … precedent both in order of time and degree of obligation, to the claims of civil society.” Also, “We have no government armed...

Pro-life candidates who support religious liberty, traditional family values and robust parental rights appear to have won four of five contests in the Mat-Su Borough’s Nov. 5 elections, according to unofficial results. Candidates were vying for two borough assembly seats and three school board seats. All offices are for three-year terms. With voter turnout at less than 9% every vote counted in a couple of closely contested races, which could end in a recount.  ...

In response to the ongoing and controversial Drag Queen Story Hour events at Anchorage’s Loussac Library, a group of Christians started holding their own story hour gatherings to offer children stories, songs and conversations based on the Bible. The Good News Club was started earlier this year after Anchorage residents voiced concern about the library’s decision to let drag queens read stories to youth that promote cross dressing and gender confusion. The library continues to...

Earlier this week Alaska Watchman reported that all teachers who are certified by the Alaska Department of Education are now forced to abide by a new gender identity policy with regards to students. This is thanks to a revision to the “Code of Ethics” put in place by Alaska’s Professional Teaching Practices Commission last year. The revised “Code of Ethics” states that, “In fulfilling obligations to students, an educator may not harass, discriminate against, or...

Many Alaska schools now mandate that teachers refer to students by their preferred gender identity, even when it contradicts the student’s biological sex. In 2016 the Obama administration instructed schools to treat students in accord with their preferred gender identity. While that instruction has since been repealed under the Trump administration, some school districts in Alaska mandate that students be allowed access to restrooms and locker rooms that align with their chosen gender identity, and...
