The phrase, “Don’t mix politics with religion” is a shopworn fantasy. It’s usually trotted out when the left finds it suitable to their needs, yet they turn around and use religion as a convenient tool when targeting the right. It is hunting season and as a radio talk-show host I like to remind people that they have a right to self-defense and the right to kill animals for food. This is not a difficult topic...

Last month U.S. Attorney General William Barr spoke at the University of Notre Dame Law School, sharing his thoughts about religious liberty in present-day America. Among the many striking statements in Barr’s speech were the following: religious liberty is “a right towards men,” but “a duty towards the Creator,” and a “duty … precedent both in order of time and degree of obligation, to the claims of civil society.” Also, “We have no government armed...

A newly-released “Values Voter Guide” by the Alaska Family Council lets Mat-Su residents know where candidates running for Borough Assembly and Borough School Board stand on abortion, religious liberty and LGBTQ issues. Voters will cast ballots on Nov. 5 in locations around the Mat-Su Valley to select three school board members and two borough assembly members. “There are clear differences in the candidates regarding student privacy, parental rights, religious liberty, abortion funding and other critical...

I watched the lawsuit and litigation play out this summer between the City of Anchorage and the Downtown Hope Center. The entire incident leading to the lawsuit would be great satirical fodder for the pages of The Onion, but it very much happened. Were it a short story, you could be forgiven for the title “Crazy-Town in A-Town.” And given that the City of Anchorage was forced to pay $100,000 in legal fees to the...

In his address to the Massachusetts Militia on Oct. 11, 1798, President John Adams said that “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Nearly 221 years later, Alaskans intend to put Adams’ maxim to the proof, as atheists, Satanists, and self-proclaimed Pastafarians continue to deliver irreligious prayers at Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meetings. Beginning in the early 1980s, the assembly invited...

“Dunleavy’s attack on unions is an attack on all Alaskans,” or so read the Sept. 29 headline of an Anchorage Daily News commentary piece by union leader Jake Metcalfe, the executive director of the Alaska State Employees Association. The column was in response to Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s administrative order, based upon the legal opinion of Attorney General Kevin Clarkson, which mandated a change in how Alaska collects union dues and fees from public employees. The...

Earlier this week Alaska Watchman reported that all teachers who are certified by the Alaska Department of Education are now forced to abide by a new gender identity policy with regards to students. This is thanks to a revision to the “Code of Ethics” put in place by Alaska’s Professional Teaching Practices Commission last year. The revised “Code of Ethics” states that, “In fulfilling obligations to students, an educator may not harass, discriminate against, or...

Anchorage officials cannot force a faith-based women’s shelter in Anchorage to admit biological males in its overnight facility. This comes after Anchorage officials dropped a complaint against the Downtown Hope Center over the shelter’s refusal to allow a man who identified as a woman into its facility. According to a Sept. 30 order from U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason, the city may not apply its non-discrimination code against the shelter. Additionally, the city must...

The Alaska Family Council, one of the most respected and long-standing pro-life and pro-family advocacy groups in Alaska was recently identified as a “hate group,” during a training session at Joint Base Elmendorf/Fort Richardson. Jim Minnery, the executive director of the organization was also identified as the leader of a hate group. Minnery, who discovered the situation after a soldier who attended the training session contacted him, alerted his supporters via email on Sept. 12....

The Alaska Bar Association is seeking to impose on all attorneys new rules of conduct, which Alaska Attorney General Kevin Clarkson says will have a chilling and unconstitutional impact on religious liberty and freedom of speech. Clarkson issued a detailed letter in response to the proposed professional conduct rule, calling it “impermissibly vague” and open to discriminatory enforcement against attorneys who fail to adhere to the imposed orthodoxy. On its face, the proposed rule prohibits...
